HANAPEPE — Kevin Lindsey corralled a tipped pass and a 35-yard runback triggered the running clock Saturday at the Mokihana Bowl.
The defensive maneuver pushed the Hamakua Cougar Midget team to a 33-0 lead after Edward Morales hit John Kalauli for the PAT.
With 4:43 remaining in the contest, the Koloa Raiders tried to come back, but fell short as time ran out.
With the Midget victory, the Hamakua Cougars left Hanapepe Stadium with a 1-1-1 record as the Cougar JPW fell to the Kapa‘a Eagles 6-2 and the Cougar PW finished in a 26-26 deadlock with Koloa.
The Cougar Midgets struck early by tapping paydirt twice in the first quarter as Jerry Lorenzo opened the scorebooks on an 8-yard run followed by Kalauli breaking open for a 82-yard TD, Morales doing the point-after honors for the 14-0 bulge at the buzzer.
Morales turned defensive in the second period with an 80-yard runback of a fumble recovery to give the Cougars a 20-0 cushion at the half.
Another long run, this time a 39-yarder by Elvis Cardoza in the third quarter, settled the scoreboard at 26-0 until Lindsey closed out the game in the final period.
The Hamakua Cougar JPW had a 2-point lead until the final eight minutes when Jacob Lewis tapped paydirt on a 5-yard charge to give Kapa‘a their 6-2 showing.
The Cougar JPW broke the defensive struggle in the second quarter by coming up with a safety.
Hamakua Cougars PW Aukai Akau had four touchdowns, but that effort was good enough for a 26-26 tie with the Koloa Packers in the PeeWee game.
The Cougars asserted themselves early as Akau rambled for touchdowns of 48 and 62 yards in the first quarter.
Koloa answered as Caleb Licke tapped paydirt on a 6-yarder in the opening frame.
Keoki Pantorilla equalized the scoreboard for Koloa in the second quarter on a 2-yard TD with Licke pulling Koloa into the lead on a 4-yard score.
He graced that TD by doing the point-after honors for the 20-12 Koloa reading at the half.
With no scoring by either teams in the third quarter, Akau tied the contest in the fourth period on a 78-yard gallop and did the PAT honors to stalemate the game 20-20.
But Licke pulled Koloa into the lead on a 4-yard TD only to have Akau pull in a Kawaika Aurello pass for 11 yards and another score.
A failed Cougar point-after attempt saw the explosive contest settle for a 26-26 deadlock.
