HONOLULU — The Waimea girls (11-1) finished third in the Division II Hawai‘i State Volleyball Championships last night, defeating the girls of La Pietra (11-11) in three close games, 24-26, 26-24 and 25-19.
Things started off slowly for both teams in Game 1, but picked up midway with La Pietra taking the lead. Towards the end, La Pietra had a commanding seven-point lead over Waimea at 23-16. Waimea fought back to tie it up at 24-24. La Pietra eventually took that game in extra points.
The girls played point for point in Game 2 with Waimea coming out on top.
In the tie-breaking Game 3, Waimea proved to be too much for La Pietra as Waimea held on to the lead the whole way through. Waimea took that deciding game by six.
Senior Nue Wong registered 13 kills and 11 digs. Teammate Chaslee Delanoza had 10 kills and 20 digs, while Tailei Agader hit seven kills and dug nine.
Setter Nani Dennis had a good night tossing up for 31 assists and getting 13 digs.
The girls advanced to the third place match by breezing past Wai‘anae in the first round in two games, 25-18 and 25-13. They moved on to easily defeat fourth-seeded St. Joseph, 25-15 and 25-11.
But top-seeded Word of Life knocked Waimea out of its state title bid. Word of Life defeated them in three games, 25-21, 17-25 and 31-29.
The girls return to Kaua‘i today.
