According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the average number of spinner dolphins per pod decreased from 134 in 1992 to 38 in 2003. That sample was done along the Kona coastline, but the problem is affecting all the Hawaiian Islands.
For this reason, NOAA is hosting a public hearing tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Aloha Beach Resort’s Pi‘ikoi Room in Kapa‘a to address tour boats, swimmers and kayakers affecting spinner dolphins’ sleep cycles in protectead waters, making them more prone to predators when swimming in open waters.
