WAIMEA — The Hanapepe Colts cheer program finished big at the annual cheer competition hosted by the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association.
Colt cheer squads finished by qualifying three squads to the national Pop Warner dance and cheer competition in Florida later this year.
Jane Garma, the interim cheer coordinator for the KPWA, said first- and
second-place teams in the different divisions earn qualifying berths to the national competition.
Garma, who along with Wescon cheer coordinator Yvonne Hosaka, has been working diligently to put together the island competition, and said the association is still seeking a permanent island cheer coordinator.
When the dust and noise settled at the Clem Gomes Gym, the Hanapepe Colts had nailed two first-place trophies and a second-place berth.
In the PeeWee Novice division, the Colts cheer squad surpassed the second-place Lihu‘e Patriots with a 68.07-point performance out of a total 88 points.
In the Junior PeeWee Novice class competition, roles were reversed. The Lihu‘e Patriots chipped out a 67.84-point performance over the Colts’ 64.50 points. The Kapa‘a Eagles rounded out the leaders in that class with 56.84 points.
The Colts took first in the Midget Small Intermediate divison over the Lihu‘e Patriots and Kapa‘a Eagles.
Tumbling like human rockets around a human pyramid, the Kekaha Panthers awed the spectators and impressed the judges to earn top honors in the JPW Advanced division.
The Koloa Raiders topped the Midget Small Novice competiton over the Kekaha Chargers in the final category of the day.
