The county Office of Community Assistance is offering nutrition classes to seniors as a component of the Healthy Aging Project, a statewide initiative developed to improve the eating habits of Hawai‘i’s older citizens and to increase their physical activity.
On Kaua‘i, seniors can sign up for free nutrition classes at the Kapa‘a or Koloa neighborhood center, a county press release states.
Classes at the Kapa‘a NC are conducted by Kaua‘i Community College nursing students with support from Victoria Mathis, a KCC nursing instructor, and Char Ono, KCC’s director of nursing. The classes are scheduled every Wednesday through Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The food pyramid, nutritional concerns for seniors, proper portions, understanding food labels and shopping for healthy foods are all topics on the agenda.
Koloa’s nutrition classes are held every Thursday from Oct. 19 to Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
