Kauai Economic Opportunity will be accepting applications throughout June for the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, designed to assist low income households.
There are two types of assistance available:
• Energy Crisis Intervention assists with up to $100 to restore power to the residence of a household whose electricity or gas has been shut off or is about to be terminated; and
• Energy Credit provides households who are not in a crisis with a one-time payment which will be deposited directly into their utility accounts.
The inability to pay an energy bill can lead to fire hazards. Some resort to unsafe methods like candles, propane stoves and barbecue grills to heat their homes when they can’t pay the bills, the release states.
To apply, households must provide the current original utility bill or termination notice from the utility company for their residence and verification that they currently reside at the service address. For more information , call KEO at 245-4077 ext. 240.
