Fatal accident closes highway

A man died in an automobile collision on Kaumuali‘i Highway near the “Halfway Bridge” last night around 6 p.m.

“The man died at the scene of the accident,” said county spokesperson Mary Daubert. “There was another male taken to the hospital as well.”

The accident involved two cars and there may have been a third one involved, Daubert said.

The accident snarled traffic in both directions on Kaumuali‘i Highway for hours.

“A single lane was reopened after about an hour or an hour and a half,” Daubert said.

Halfway Bridge lies between Lihu‘e and Kalaheo near the Tree Tunnel Road.

Reports indicated miles of backed up cars by the time the road was reopened.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The identity of the man who was killed is being withheld until proper notifications have been made.
