The KIF earned a seed in every tournament except in girls doubles, as the HHSAA/Carlsmith Ball State Tennis Championships got under way at both the Po‘ipu Kai and Kiahuna Courts on Wednesday.
Kula senior Kyle Barrett claimed a 10th seed in boys singles, followed by Kapa‘a freshman Lyndsey Tom with a seventh seed in girls singles, and Kula’s brother duo of Alex and Dylan Latif capturing a ninth seed.
Punahou has won every boys team title since 1991. Kaua‘i’s Brad Lum-Tucker (2000) holds the last and only state singles title for a KIF athlete.
Kaua‘i’s S. Masaki and D. Mizutani won a girls doubles state title back in 1970, the only doubles crown for a KIF school.
Punahou has also dominated the girls ranks, winning the past three state championships.
On Thursday, Barrett will play at 9 a.m. at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts. Kapa‘a’s Taylor Alfiler battles unseeded Earl Carlos at 12 noon at the Po‘ipu Kai Tennis Courts.
Waimea’s Jake Anderson faces Moanalua’s Mar Manaois at 1:30 p.m. at Po‘ipu Kai.
Island School’s Justin Vea goes up against Charles Monsell at 1:30 p.m. at Po‘ipu Kai.
In girls singles, Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom will play on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Kiahuna Courts.
Also receiving a first round bye is Kapa‘a junior Crystine Ito, who hits the Kiahuna Courts at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
Waimea senior Sonya Tacub battles Debie Bolosan at 12 noon on Wednesday at Kiahuna.
Kula’s Ariel Carlson takes on Hilo’s Kimberly Katada at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Kiahuna.
Waimea’s Tiffany Lum/Jenny Rumbaoa joust with Mililani’s Erin Yamamoto/Jessica Kaneshiro at 1:30 p.m. at Kiahuna on Wednesday.
Kapa‘a’s Kelli Okamoto/Mailika Napoleon take on HBA’s Katherine Pang/Joanna Lee at 2:30 p.m. at Kiahuna on Wednesday.

Clarification of attire
As specified by the HHSAA, T-shirts made of cotton fabric will not be permitted, including P.E. school uniforms. Tennis shirts without a collar, which are of a fabric such as Nike Dri Fit, Reebok Play Dry, Adidas Climacool Formotion or similar tennis shirts are acceptable tennis attire. For boys, shirts may not be sleeveless. For girls, sleeveless attire is acceptable.
