It was close as you could possibly get, but when the last tennis ball was served, the Red Raider girls tennis team captured their second straight KIF championship, yesterday at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
Kaua’i and Kapa’a battled all the way until the final volley and the season actually ended in a tie between the two schools.
“The season ended up tied. We both have one meet loss to each other, so the first tie-breaker is head to head matches, they won 3-2 and we won 3-2 in the second round, so it came down to individual match wins throughout the season and I think they got one or two more wins than us,” Kapa’a coach Jon Tom said.
And to get to that point, Kaua’i needed a strong showing against Island School on Saturday and with the pressure on, the Red Raider girls answered the challenge with a 5-0 victory.
“It was never in our hands. We had our chance last week. Kaua’i High stepped up and did what they needed to do to win. It was a real close season,” Tom said.
