With the varsity team opening up the 2006 KIF girls basketball season with a 4-0 record, the Warrior junior varsity squad followed suit by completing a perfect first round at 4-0 with a 40-24 win on Tuesday night over Kaua‘i.
Kapa‘a, the defending KIF JV girls basketball champions, has received strong play from Jondi Das, Sarah Tangalin, and Leilani Laranio.
In their first game, the Warriors edged Waimea, 43-38 and they followed that performance up with a 43-28 victory over the Red Raiders.
Another close call ensued between the Menehune and Warriors, but in the end, the girls in green prevailed, 36-31.
And to cap off a 4-0 first round, Kapa‘a trampled over Kaua‘i, 40-24 on Tuesday, thanks to Tangalin’s heroics.
Waimea sits in second place with a 1-2 record and Kaua‘i is still searching for that elusive first win (0-3).
The Menehune are led by Tatum Gonsalves, Chaelyn Briones, Sera Pascual, and Mollie Connelly.
In the meantime, Amanda Mayer and Wailana Borrero pace the Red Raiders’ efforts.
KIF girls hoops continues on Saturday, with Kaua‘i hosting Waimea. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m., with varsity action starting 20 minutes after the completion of the JV contest.
