The days of practice will come to light tonight as the KIF hosts the opening games of the 2006 girls basketball season.
Kapa’a High School will host the opening contest starting at 5:30 p.m. when the junior varsity squads take the court. The varsity teams match up 20 minutes following the completion of the JV contest.
In preseason contests played about a month ago, all three teams fared equally against opponents from Kalani High School, Kailua High School and Punahou II.
These three O’ahu schools presented tough, aggressive play for Kaua’i competitors, and honed the blade for KIF fans.
Kaua’i entered the arena on the tail end of their tryouts, several of their players coming from the KIF girls soccer team, and despite not finalizing a roster, the Red Raiders could see leadership emerging in their ball handler Rachael Taira who gets support from Carie Inouye.
Chanee Dunbar, a transfer from Kona, hints of blossoming under the boards along with Cherisse Rapozo and the all-around versatility of Nani Dennis.
The Red Raiders are coached by Dennis Aquino.
Moani Durant has the leadership role for the Menehune who entered the pre-season arena with coach Elton Montemayor juggling coaching duties between preparing the girls team as well as getting his boys team ready for the HHSAA boys state tournament.
Joining Durant will be four freshmen who showed strong against the preseason opponents. These four, Kierra Barba, Natalie Mata, Aiko Grande and Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade, give the Menehune seeds for strong growth over the next seasons as the young players contribute their talents while honing their skills.
Kapa’a features a strong returning force under the leadership of veteran coach Gary Kodani and will be ready for action when the doors of the Bernice Hundley open tonight.
