Winning awards, plaques, and some extra cash to boot, outstanding Kaua’i employees of the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation were recognized by their peers and supervisors recently.
Outstanding employees in the Kaua’i region of HHSC were honored recently with HHSC 2005 Excellence Awards at the Kaua’i region board meeting, an HHSC spokesperson said in a press release.
These awards stem from co-worker nominations. Honorees are selected by members of special committees at both the regional and corporate level.
Greg Planas, a dietary supervisor at Mahelona Medical Center, was awarded both the HHSC Kauai Region Community Award and the HHSC Corporate Community Award for his contributions to fellow Kauaians.
He’s worked at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital since 1984 without taking a single sick day. With skill and good cheer, he oversees preparation of food for special events for long-term-care residents, volunteers and visiting dignitaries.
Whether its for 10 people or 1,000, food from the Planas kitchen is always beautifully prepared and delicious. He’s a certified dietary manager for hospital dietary services.
He regularly helps with food fund-raisers for schools, as well as being a reading tutor. An expert in time management, he also is a Kaua’i Hospice volunteer and baseball coach, as well as being a multi-gallon donor for the Blood Bank of Hawaii for over 20 years.
Josephine “Jo” Chapman, head nurse of the Emergency Department, has been at West Kauai Medical Center at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital since 1976.
She was awarded the Kauai Region Spirit Award. Her No. 1 priority has always been to provide exceptional customer service in a caring and competent environment.
She sets high standards for the Emergency Department, and her efforts have resulted in a well-coached, excellence-driven staff. As Emergency Department visits steadily increased over the past few years, she tracked the data and staffing needs to develop a creative schedule ensuring the patients are provided safe and excellent care.
In an environment normally associated with stress, anxiety and fear, Chapman created an atmosphere of caring, competent efficiency.
Jasmine Taniguchi, admitting clerk at West Kauai Clinics in the Eleele Shopping Center, received the Kauai Region Excellence Award.
Going to the doctor can be a stressful experience, and Taniguchi is kind, caring, and helps patients feel more relaxed and comfortable.
She always takes the extra steps necessary to provide consistently-accurate patient and clinic records, collaborating with patients, physicians, nurses, and other staff members.
She is intelligent, perceptive, and diligent. She demonstrates the highest work ethics, and is a shining example to everyone with whom she works.
The honorees received plaques, awards, and monetary stipends awarded by Tom Driskill, HHSC chief executive officer, and Orianna Skomoroch, HHSC Kauai Region chief executive officer.
