LIHU’E — Kuku’i Grove Shopping Center was extremely busy last night, but not for shopping, instead, a good-sized crowd stalked the center stage area for the official weighin ceremony and autograph session, which were preludes to the Garden Isle MMA Cage Match No. 3.
“This is the first-ever weigh in event here and we have some of the best fighters from Kaua’i and the rest of the world, so it’s going to be Kaua’i against the rest of the world,” event organizer Vance Pascua said.
Also on hand were UFC allstar fighters Kit Cope, Niko Vitale, Kimo Leopoldo, and Robbie Lawler, who handed out their autographs to fans and spectators.
Puhi Disciples fighter Brandon Wong, a Kapa’a High School graduate was one of many contestants who tipped the scale with a much higher weight than expected.
Those who weighed in over the expected fighting weight were forced to lose some pounds before tonight’s bouts at Hanapepe Stadium.
Doors for the MMA event open at 5 p.m. and general admission tickets are still available at Meyvn Skate in Lihu’e, Tropical Tantrum in Kapa’a, Dynamic Tinting in Puhi, Sweet and Sassy in ‘Ele’ele, Westside Sporting Goods in Waimea, M&H Service in Waimea, and Wong’s Restaurant in Hanapepe. Ringside seats are sold out. General admission tickets are $25 and $30 at the door.
