First year head coach Roxanne Cardejon will lead her Menehune cheer squad to the HHSAA/Zippy’s Restaurants Cheerleading State Championships tomorrow.
The fifth annual event begins at around 2 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center on the lower campus of the University of Hawai’i-Manoa.
Four-time defending state champion Kamehameha-Kapalama of the ILH has won a championship in every year of the competition’s history (one medium squad and three large squad).
Lahainaluna of the MIL and Mililani of the OIA are the two squads looking to dethrone the cheerleading powerhouse.
Three-time medium squad defending state champion Moanalua looks to make it four straight titles as they face nine other squads, including Waimea, for the title.
Cardejon, the former head coach of the OIA’s Kalaheo High School is optimistic about her team’s chances.
Although her squad is dominated by underclassmen, the core group of seniors are heavily experienced.
The Menehune are making their first trip to the state competition since 2002, the inaugural year of the championships.
Other teams participating in the medium division are ‘Aiea, Baldwin, Castle, Kamehameha-Hawai’i, Leilehua, Moanalua, Pearl City, Radford, and Waiakea.
