The pageant just won’t go away. Art Umezu sent me a photo of Jasmine Ornellas, Miss Kauai 2006, who was posing for a photo with himself and Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (how many of you remember that famous guy?) when she was Tiny Miss Kauai in 1987! Holly Wong Zahn’s (How many of you remember when she was Miss Kauai?) e-mail links her with Angela Everhart, Miss Garden Isle 2006. Holly is Angela’s coach and choreographer, as well as fashion designer, for Angela’s talent presentation, which took first place at the competition. Holly choreographed the ahuroa portion, with Loke Obrero doing the otea portion. Congratulations to all on a great job! And, Holly even got to enjoy Hamura Saimin and Hanamaulu Restaurant grinds before having to leave!
Dickie Chang did a great job as master of ceremonies at the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative board candidates’ forum, and Bruce Smalling made it over. It was definitely a media event, as Ron Wiley and Tom Finnegan were both in the house, as was The Garden Island’s Dave Campbell, Adam Harju (wife Julie Harju is one mean baker, and she and son Isaiah Harju both came to check out Adam in action), and Lester Chang was doing the story. Of course, there were a lot of KIUC people there (Walt Barnes is not quite ready for tonight’s drag races, but will be there), as well as some concerned citizens (Bernie Sakoda and Wanda Shibata were both in the house) who braved the rains.
OK, ‘nuff said…it’s time to go meet Gov. Linda Lingle, state Adjutant Gen. Robert G.F. Lee, and Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste for the soldiers’ welcome-home parade and blessing of the Vidinha Stadium rubberized track.
