It didn’t take place in Las Vegas, but the high-stakes roping event held at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu had that same feeling, as island ropers saddled up for the big payoff.
There were seven teams of headers and heelers, who competed for the high stakes 5-steer jackpot on Feb. 10.
The roping was a paniolo prelude to an ‘Ohana Productions concert under the stars.
Anteing up the $400 per team entry for this Best of the Best competition were partners Jimmy Miranda with Lelan Nishek, Pat (Sam) Brun Jr. with Robert Rita, Kahea White and Bert Miranda, Stuart Wellington and Stanley Ornellas, Tommy Aiu with Shane Molina, Ross Farias and Lance Fu, and Randy Brun with Pat Kelekoma Jr.
Each team had five runs to catch their steers in the fastest times.
When the dust settled, the big winners were Ross Farias and Lance Fu with a time of 42.78 seconds on four.
Second place went to Randy Brun and Pat Kelekoma Jr with a 44.31 on four.
The overall fastest time on one run was a first place win for Pat (Sam) Brun, Jr. and Robert Rita with a 6.38.
Second place fastest time pay-off went to Farias and Fu with a 7.45.
As a side note, it should be clarified that on Superbowl Sunday, David Nawai, a rodeo announcer, crashed his chair down to the ground, instead of Bob Brun.
