Kamehameha eliminates Kaua’I

That familiar face from Kalaheo doomed Kaua’i’s chances in quarter-final action of the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Girls State Soccer Championships, yesterday on Maui.

Kalaheo girl and Kamehameha sophomore Sanoe Souza came up big with a goal in the 48th minute to seal the deal for the top-seeded Warriors, 2-1 at Kana’iaupuni Stadium.

Caycie Gusman netted the first goal of the contest at the 42nd minute and Souza followed suit just six minutes later for the 2-0 halftime lead.

But Kaua’i wasn’t about to get shut out, as Skye Shimabukuro scored her third goal of the tournament at the 79th minute.

Red Raider goalie Tamalyn Hasegawa played tough once again with eight saves.

The Warriors outshot the Red Raiders, 11-2.

Kaua’i now moves down to the consolation bracket and plays Kona, today at 1 p.m.

The Waimea boys start their state title quest on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. against Kaiser.
