Leaders with the state Public Utilities Commission announced that operators at the Hawaii One Call Center are now taking calls from excavators 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The service was activated Sunday, Jan. 1, as provided by state law.
The number to call before doing any digging, to find out if there are underground utility lines in the areas of digging, is, toll-free, 1-866-432-7287.
Under the one call center law, enacted in July 2004, the Hawaii One Call Center operators will provide advanced warnings to excavators of locations of public and private underground facilities prior to excavators beginning digging.
The Hawaii One Call Center is similar to other centers operating throughout the nation.
But it is the first of its kind in Hawai‘i requiring mandatory participation by both excavators and operators, such as those representing public utilities, according to a PUC spokesperson.
Excavators or operators who fail to comply with the law may be subject to penalties.
