For the third year, the annual Old Koloa Sugar Mill Walk/Run was a very successful event, and helped raise money for wellness events at Wilcox Health (Wilcox Memorial Hospital and Kauai Medical Clinic), organizers said.
Participants had a choice of distances: five kilometer, 10 kilometer, and 10 miles. The course started at Anne Knudsen Park in Koloa, via the Koloa bypass road, Ala Kinoiki, to the old McBryde Sugar Company mill, and back.
Race Director Pam Kruse of Fit Bodies said, “This was another successful partnership with Wilcox Health Foundation. The course is beautiful, the turnout better than ever, and the support from the community and businesses very generous.
“Thanks especially to Jennifer Morishige at Wilcox Health Foundation for the overall coordination, and the many volunteers who worked so hard to make this event happen and support a good cause.” Proceeds from the race go to Wilcox Health Foundation, and are allocated for health and wellness programs at Wilcox Health, Kruse said.
All participants received free T-shirts again featuring “The Old Koloa Sugar Mill,” an original watercolor by local artist Helen Mehl, who created the art expressly for the event, and who is also a volunteer at Wilcox Health.
Following the race, Pam Kruse and KMC orthopedic surgeons Dr. David Rovinsky, Dr. Timothy Schendel and Dr. Greg Kassel presented awards.
Overall male and female finishers received special ceramic-tile awards, and medals went to age-group winners.
Participants enjoyed a healthy breakfast, and there was entertainment by Albert Genovia’s band, Vicious Styles Hawaii, and door-prize drawings for massages, dinners, athletic gear, outdoor activities and more.
The major sponsors for the race were Wilcox Health Foundation, Fit Bodies, The Bone & Joint Center of Kauai Medical Clinic and the County of Kauai.
Other sponsors included Active.
