Now that people have gotten used to the roundabout at the intersection of the Kapa’a bypass road, ‘Olohena Road and other streets near the Kapa’a New Park, it’s time to pretty it up, area business leaders said.
Leaders of the Kapaa Business Association have gotten permission from state Department of Transportation Highways Division officials to install some form of beautification items on the inner circle of the round-about, where a huge, steel power pole has already been tagged by a vandal or graffiti artist, said Bob Bartolo of the association.
Dinner for two at one of the better Kapa’a-area restaurants is the prize for the one coming up with the best design for beautification of the inside of the roundabout, he said.
Permission has been granted to put some form of beautification items in the center of the roundabout as long as they don’t obscure drivers’ vision, Bartolo said.
Nothing more than two feet high will be allowed, he added.
Those wishing to submit ideas for the contest should put together a drawing or brief explanation of their ideas, he added.

Submissions are requested to be to him no later than Tuesday, Jan. 31, he continued.
While one of the original ideas was to install some type of planter, Bartolo and others in the Kapaa Business Association will look at any suggestions, he said.
“We want to give it some color, some Hawaiian beauty,” he said.
