After losing both of its top players in Ulu Kelekoma and Sherri Gebauer to graduation, the Red Raider softball team turned to a good mix of experienced athletes and first-time players to rise to the top of the KIF softball world this year.
Senior Ku’ulei Manintin has been the sweetest surprise for head coach Jacque Inouye and the defending KIF champions.
On Saturday, Manintin slammed a key inside-the-park homerun in the first game against the Menehune.
Last Wednesday, Manintin showed her strong arm on the mound with the win against Kapa’a, which catapulted the Red Raiders to the first round championship.
Not only does Manintin perform well at the plate and on the pitcher’s mound, but she’s also been a steady player at centerfield.
KIF softball takes the week off and opens up the second round on Tuesday, December 27, with Waimea (4-2) battling Kapa’a at Waimea Canyon Field, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Then the Red Raiders (5-1) and Warriors (0-6) will face off at Kapa’a Ballpark on Friday, Dec. 30 in doubleheader action, starting at 10 a.m.

The same type of schedule happens next week, with the JV competitions preceding the varsity action (Dec. 28-29). The Red Raiders and Warriors battle at 5 p.m. on both days.
