Recruiters say “join the U.S. Navy to see the world.”
Simon Jongert may be a case study that you don’t necessarily have to be in the military to travel internationally professionally.
After beginning his Marriott Corporation career as a catering director at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel in Holland, and later returning there as general manager, Jongert, general manager of the Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki Beach, has been all over the world for and with Marriott officials.
He retires at the end of next month after 30 years with the company, having lived and worked in Holland, Malaysia, Palm Springs, Calif., and, for the last four and a half years, at the Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.
General managers are normally rotated around every four to five years at Marriott properties, said Jongert, who served six years in Malaysia before coming to Kaua’i.
While his official last day is Tuesday, Jan. 31, a new general manager is expected to be named as early as the third full week of January, he said.
Kaua’i Marriott Resort & Beach Club associates surprised Jongert with a slide-show presentation, enough lei to completely cover his face and head, and a mahalo event, during the annual associates Christmas party last week.
He surprised them by performing a hula.
