Dora Orio Yamaguchi

Dora Orio Yamaguchi of Kealia died Sept. 25, 2005, at Garden Isle Health Care, at the age of 96.

Born in Koloa, she was a school teacher retired from the state Department of Education.

She is survived by her daughter, Leva Hayashi of Ewa Beach, O’ahu; brother, Paul Okamura of Kalaheo; sister, Fumiko Morisato of Pearl City, O’ahu; grandson, Lon (Vicky) Nagahiro of Kealia; granddaughter, Tori (Deacon) Arreola of Ewa Beach, O’ahu; great-granddaughter, Ashlee Nagahiro, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services and inurnment were private.

Arrangements were handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home


Veronica Duclayan Newall

Veronica Duclayan Newall of Kekaha died Oct. 13, 2005, at her home at the age of 55.

Born Sept. 14, 1950, on O’ahu, she was a book-keeper.

The cherished wife of William Newall, she is also survived by Juliet (Vince) Flores, Liana (Kelly) Gregg, Shannon (Matthew) Taba, Jason (Daisy) Newall, and Kjell Newall; grand-mother Flora Tompiat; parents Susie (Irineo) Salvacion and Leon (Evangeline) Duclayan. She was also the sister of Juliet (Pete) Riopta, Gerald (Josie) Pongasi, Johnny (Karen) Pongasi, Bernadette (Samuel) Banasihan, Priscilla (Norman) Akana, Roy (Adele) Duclayan, Avelina (Deanna) Salvacion, Norman (Jayme) Salvacion, Nadine (John) Abreu, Abbilee (Kanani) Salvacion, Larry (Clarissa) Duclayan, Laura Mae Duclayan, Lisa-Ann (Mariano) Duclayan, Lei-Ann (Fred) Duclayan, Larissa (Robert) Ganiron, and Laurena (Jeffrey) Bungsay.

She is also survived by grand-children: Vickie, Julio, Joshua Flores; Kourtney, Kaylah Gregg; Trey, Cole, Aliyah Taba; Jaydi, Kai Newall; and lots of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Father Larry. Burial will follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.

Casual attire is suggested by members of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary


Louis Freitas

Louis Freitas of Kalaheo died Oct. 10, 2005, at Straub Hospital at the age of 86.

Born Sept. 23, 1919, on Kaua’i, he was an equipment operator at Mc-Bryde Sugar.

He is survived by son Louis “Buddy” Freitas of Honolulu; two sisters: Anna Fune of Kalaheo and Beatrice Martin of California; one aunt, Georgina Rosa of Kalaheo; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Nap. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Church Cemetery.

Casual attire is suggested by members of the family. Arrangements are being handled by borthwick Kauai Mortuary


Betty Kim Kagawa

Betty Kim Kagawa of Waimea died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Oct. 15, 2005, at the age of 78. Born in Honolulu on Oct. 20, 1926, she was preceded in death by husband, Dr. Thomas Tatsuo Kagawa, and son, Sam Kagawa. She is survived by sons: William (Maribel) Kagawa of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; David (Cinthy) Kagawa of Waimea; and Paul Kagawa of Spokane, Wash.; daughters: Maile (Pat) Lam and Janet (Greg) Fong, both of Honolulu; daughter-in-law, Joy Kagawa of Waimea; 14 grandchildren; brother, Earl Kim; sisters, Clara Amundsen and Rosie Chang. Funeral service officiated by Father Larry will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct., 21, at the Sacred Hearts Church, Waimea, followed by interment at Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery in Hanapepe, at 4 p.m. Aloha attire is suggested, and flowers should be omitted, according to family members.

Minoru Kubota

Minoru Kubota of Kapa’a died at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on Oct. 13, 2005, at the age of 82. Born in Koloa on Aug. 10, 1923, he was a road sweeper with the County of Kaua’i as well as a self employed business man.

He is survived by his wife, Kiyoko; four sons: Jerry Kubota of Kapa’a; Allan Kubota of Provo, Utah; Kenneth (Cheryl) Kubota of Kapa’a; and Bobbie (Lynn) Kubota of Kapa’a; three daughters: Eunice (Dexter) Olivas of Kalaheo; Bernice (Roy) Hashimoto of ‘Ele’ele; and Joyce (Glen) Kaneshiro of Kane’ohe, O’ahu; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters: Gladys Matsuda and Kimi (Ed) Michelman, both of Honolulu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Kapaa Missionary Church. The service begins at 3 p.m. Casual or aloha attire is suggested, and flowers should be omitted, family members said.

Kasumi Marian Dela Cruz

Kasumi Marian Dela Cruz of Waimea died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Oct. 17, 2005, at the age of 88. Born in Makaweli on Feb. 10, 1917, she was a clerk with J. Okada Store.

She is survived by children: Clayton W. (Teddie) Dela Cruz of Waimea; Edwin R. (Kris) Dela Cruz of Waimea; and Lynn K. Dela Cruz of Kekaha; 10 grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; brothers, Hiroshi Choriki and Raymond (Doris) Choriki; and sisters, Teruko Habu and Ethel (Tad) Tsuda.

Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at the Lawai Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church. Service officiated by Pastor Larry Johnson will begin at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Kauai Memorial Gardens. Family members suggest casual attire.

Conrado T. Gawaran of Hanapepe died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Oct. 14, 2005, at the age of 86. Born in Philippines on May 19, 1919, he was a retired farmer.

He is survived by wife, Patricia Gawaran; four sons: Rogelio (Imelda) Gawaran, Francisco (Lucita) Gawaran, Joselito (Wilma) Gawaran, all of Hanapepe; and Amado (Cecile) Gawaran of Philippines; three daughters: Criscencia (Alberto) Malayao, Rufina (Alfredo) Alejandro and Remedies (Robert) Nicolas, all of the Philippines; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Angeles Gawaran of Philippines; sister, Rosita Torres of Philippines.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel. A prayer service begins at 7 p.m.
