A single-car crash in Hanama’ulu Monday afternoon resulted in the death of a Kaua’i resident and snarled traffic in and around Hanama’ulu for hours.
Mitchell Quinones, 60, of Wailua Home-steads, was heading south on Kuhio Highway in a Toyota pickup near the intersection with Hanama’ulu Road, when his truck crossed the centerline and two lanes of traffic, climbed onto the sidewalk, struck a four-inch pipe at the entrance to the Hanama’ulu 7-Eleven store, and flipped on its side before finally coming to a stop, according to county officials.
The Wailua resident was extricated from his car and taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
According to Kaua’i Police Department officers, speed was not a factor in the crash that happened at about 1 p.m.
Quinones was the fourth person to die in a traffic accident on Kaua’i this year, according to Mary Daubert, county public information officer.
