When Brittney Carvalho, Poe Gantt, and Amniesty Ragsac pounds the ball down for a kill, it’s Joliann Arzadon that they have to thank for setting them up.
A KIF all-star as a sophomore, Arzadon has emerged as the top setter in the KIF and one of the best in the state.
The Warrior girls’ squad is currently ranked somewhere near the top 10 in the state, according to the latest Honolulu Star-Bulletin poll.
However, their 3-0 unblemished record is on the line tonight against the Red Raiders, who are 1-1.
The last time Kaua’i and Kapa’a battled, the match went to five sets, with the Warriors prevailing in the end.
“Emotionally, this team feeds off each other and they always work hard,” Kapa’a head coach Kaipo Kealalio Jr. said on Saturday after their win against Waimea.
A win for the Warriors will give them the first round title and an automatic shot at a championship game, if they should slip up in the second round. The Kapa’a boys are in the same boat as their counter-parts. Head coach Merrill Carvalho and his squad has come a long way.
But with a win against the Red Raiders tonight, the Warriors will walk away with the first round title with a 4-0 record.
“We’re kind of in reversed roles with Kaua’i High this year. This team believes that they can win and that’s a big difference from last season,” Carvalho said in a recent interview.
Setter Danny Rodrick has felt good from the start of the season about his team’s chances.
“We just bond better this year and we make sure everyone gets involved,” Rodrick said after their opening night win.
Kaua’i travels to the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium at 5 p.m. tonight for the girls’ match and the boys’ match follows, no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
