WAILUA — John Amaral was heading back to Kapa’a, but ended up in the hospital instead.
Ed Reneau, the county’s roads superintendent, said that Amaral had just completed hauling a container for the Lihu’e Transfer Station when he got caught in a downpour just outside the Wailua Golf Course.
The driver lost control of the truck in the deluge and regained control, but the vehicle skidded off the roadway after being scraped on the passenger side, according to Reneau.
One of the police officers who was on the scene directing traffic said it was a good thing the truck didn’t cross the centerline. That might have caused fatalities in the accident that was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
A county bucket loader was used to pull the truck from the tangle of trees along Kuhio Highway, and traffic slowed to a crawl. One lane was closed off while the stricken vehicle was loaded onto a trailer for transport to the Kapa’a baseyard.
Reneau said that Amaral was taken to the hospital, where he remained over-night for observation.
