Maeda wins senior golf title

Richard Maeda was the top winner in the “A” division of the Kaua’i Seniors Golf Club Tournament on Aug. 27 at the Wailua Golf Course.
Maeda was followed by Smash Tatom, Pat Ramelb, Donald Kawane, Walter Hiramoto, Richard Araki, Ralph Fujinaka, Masa Arakawa, and Mel Mandrigues.
In the “B” division, Ismo Yoshishige beat out Glenn Shibuya for the title. Yoshi Nakao, Bette Goo, Bob Yoshida, Wilfred Kimura, Harry Otsuka, Tom Tokioka, Dan Spriggs, and Paul Awazu rounded out the field.
Sparky Farwell won the “C” division over Lindy Akita. Mildred Konishi, Katherine Hamamura, Donald Travaso, Grant Brailsford, Warren Mizutani, Tatsuo Asari, Dennis Ikehara, and Clarence Gardner finished up in the top 10. Jack Lucas won the prize for the closest to the hole shot.
Kawaihau Little League accepting applications
The Kawaihau Community Little League is now accepting applications for board officers and board members for its up-coming 2005-06 season.
Applications can be picked up and dropped off at Pono Market during its normal business hours now through Sept. 9. All qualified applicants are required to attend an interview on Tuesday, Sept. 13, that will be scheduled after the applications have been reviewed. Elections will follow on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at Anahola Clubhouse.

Stealers, Pitbulls tie
The Purple Pitbulls and the Eastside Steelers battled till the end in the AYSO U12 girls’ soccer action at Wailua Houselots Park. The game ended in a 2-2 tie. The Stealers scored two goals in the first half and the Pitbulls came back with two goals in the second half. Anolani Coon and Jannin Hashizume scored the Pitbull goals. Paulette Guerra, and Mariah Pai played strong soccer.
Anahola horseshoe pitchers continue season
The Anahola Horseshoe Club with the Hanalei Horseshoe Pitchers were host to a mixed singles horseshoe pitching tournament on August 20 at the Anahola Horseshoe courts.
14 pitchers squared off into two classes playing a round robin cancellation scoring format. In the A class, 1st-place went to Anahola’s Howard “Lopaka” Kamoku, Jr. with a 5-1 record (33.76-percent ringer avg.) Second place went to Northshore’s Will Brewer of Hanalei and Uncle Peter Pi’ilani of Hanalei came in third. Northshore dominated in class B, thanks to champion Kris Offenbacher of Hanalei. Kris bulled his way to the top position with an impressive undefeated record with a 27-percent ringer avg. 2nd place was Ed Constantine of Hanalei and third went to Matt McComb of Hanalei. Armstrong to train with team this winter
PARIS — Lance Armstrong plans to train with his team this winter, increasing speculation he will end his retirement and attempt an eighth straight Tour de France win. “It’s definitely an open possibility, I know he is on the bike,” Discovery Channel team director Johan Bruyneel told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday.
