With the same last name as Alfred Hitchcock, it was fitting that 10-year-old surfer Luke, made the rest of the field “scared” in his very first NSSA contest on Maui recently.
The Kapa‘a resident made it all the way to the finals in the Open Mini-Grom division and came away with the fourth-place medal.
“That is a huge accomplishment for him and I’m very proud. He got 1st in his semi-final heat,” his mom Julie Hitchcock said.
Another Kaua‘i surfer who fared extremely well at the NSSA’s first competition on Maui was Kalen Galtes, who placed third in the Mini-Grom division and sixth in the Explorer Menehune contest.
Winners received 1,000 points in the season standings, which are used to determine qualifiers for the national meet. Second-place earned 860 points, third got 730, fourth earned 670, fifth got 610, and sixth earned 583.
The NSSA-Hawai‘i’s second meet is scheduled for September 10-11 at Lahaina Harbor. NSSAHawai‘ i meet #5 (Nov. 5-6) and #7 (Feb. 4-5) are the two Kaua‘i contests.
