The 2005 Hawai‘i State Senior Softball Tournament at the Waipio Sports Complex was held on August 2-4 with a total of forty teams participating.
All seven of Kaua‘i’s Senior teams participated in the various divisions. The successful Kauai teams were Kawaihau in the E Division playing for the championship but was nosed out to finish 2nd in their division and K-Makules who exploded in their final game to finish 3rd in the C Division.
The most exciting division for Kaua‘i was highlighted by West Kaua‘i playing East Kaua‘i in the D Division.
Both West Kauai and East Kaua‘i dominated their respective pools. Before the championship game started both teams got together on the pitcher’s mound in an unprecedented show of sportsmanship for a resounding cheer.
The top of the first inning started off with a bang for East Kauai with lead-off batter Damien Victorino hitting a homer and hits followed by Ron Javier, Alex Youn, Rick Ramones, Jerome Hew and Ned Night-owl scoring five runs.
West Kaua‘i responded in the bottom of the first with two runs with hits from Larry Eflian, Joe Tafija, Junior Rivera and Pat Pavao. East Kaua‘i was held scoreless in the top of the second while West Kauai scored four runs with hits from Richard Carveiro and John Patt talking the lead 6-5.
The big inning for East Kauai was the top of the fourth scoring seven runs with seven hits in a row from Victorino, Javier, Youn, Koerte, Ramones, Boro and Hew.
West Kauai scored just one more run in the 5′ while East Kauai added five. The final score, East Kauai 17, West Kauai 7. Multiple hitters for West Kauai were Efan, Tafiia, and Pavao. Multiple hitters for East Kauai were Victorino with 2 homeruns, Javier, Youn, Koerte, Ramones and Hew. Ronnie Holt overcame gusty winds to become the winning pitcher. Scoring was done by Sweetie Lopez.
This game was the second consecutive D Division State Championship for Pake Domdoma, coach of East Kaua‘i.
