As part of 1100 vigils planned across the United States, Kaua‘i residents scheduled a candlelight vigil near the Wailua County Store Wednesday night to support the vigil of a mother of a fallen Army soldier in Iraq.
A report from Wailua Homesteads said about two dozen people showed up for the vigil, and that rain fell during the event.
Cindy Sheehan has continued a vigil near President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, to ask him why her son died. Her son Casey, 24, an Army specialist who was a Humvee mechanic, was killed in Sadr City, Iraq, on April 4, 2004.
For the Kaua‘i vigil, Lihu‘e resident Doug Miller said a meditation session will be held, followed by a vigil scheduled at 7:15 p.m.
Candlelight vigils are scheduled to be held across the nation at 7:30 p.m.
The vigils offer a way for folks to come together and mark the sacrifices of Sheehan and other families whose family members are in the military and have been sent to Iraq.
Sheehan said she will remain out side Bush’s ranch until she gets an answer.
Bush has said he too would like U.S. troops to return home safely one day.
