Get your tickets early because this year’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course and Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort promises to be the best ever.
“We should have a great event because three of the top five-ranked players in the world will be here,” Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course director Craig Sasada said.
Unlike many of the PGA Tour tournaments, the Grand Slam of Golf is unique because of its intimate setting.
“I’m just looking forward to the closeness of the four players. There will be a lot of close contact with the people here and I think it’s a lot more personable than any other field,” Sasada said.
Sasada noted that preparations for the course has already begun.
“Normal things like course preparations, slowly cutting the greens down and getting them verified are what we are working on,” Sasada mentioned.
With a field of three veterans of the event, including last year’s winner Phil Mickelson and third-place finisher Retief Goosen, the course will be flooded with fans who may not be golf fans.
“I’m looking forward to it and the people here have a great opportunity to see some great golf, plus if you’re a kid you gotta want to be here for sure because you may never get this opportunity again,” Sasada said.
A big reason for that is the return of Tiger Woods, who will make his seventh overall appearance in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Woods last roamed the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course in 2002, which was the last of his five straight Grand Slam of Golf wins.
Since Woods won two majors this year (British Open, Masters), it opened the door for a wildcard participant and Retief Goosen narrowly edged Vijay Singh for the final spot.
The only newcomer of the event is Michael Campbell, who outdueled Woods at the U.S. Open.
And if the four players aforementioned are not able to make it for some reason, Vijay Singh is the next alternate in line.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features a total purse of $1 million, with the champion earning $400,000.
The 36-hole stroke-play event will be shown live on TNT on Tuesday, November 22, and Wednesday, November 23.
The first day, November 21, is a pro-am event featuring celebrities, junior golfers, and club pros from around the state.
