Definition of Hawaiian
A question regarding your letter about a “Hawaiian” being rejected from Kamehameha schools. He noticed people with less Hawaiian blood than him who clearly looked Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and other races walking around campus after having been accepted. He mentioned this in an attempt to justify the school system and say that other races benefit. In reality, this a clear message that the school system set up by the Princess isn’t working and will never be fair in it’s current method of exclusion? I don’t think the Princess ever envisioned a system where a person with 1/16th Hawaiian ancestry and 15/16th Japanese ancestry would go to school while a person with 1/4th Hawaiian ancestry was excluded.
Whether it’s Kamehameha schools or a Hawaiian government takeover, to be considered any race should require a minimum of 50-percent blood ancestry, or, proof that the highest percentage of blood ancestry you have is that race. If Hawaiian is your race based on those parameters you should be given a good job, prime land, and be eligible for the Princess’ money. All others should consider themselves to be whatever the highest portion of blood ancestry they really are, or a combination claim if you wish, and act accordingly. Keeping the aloha spirit alive and preserving our beautiful island in its present state for future generations is the real crisis, and it’s shared by all residents of Kaua‘i regardless of their race.
