Saturday, July 30 was a picture perfect day in Hanalei Bay. Sunny blue skies, calm and glassy water. It was the perfect day to host the second annual Hanalei Bay Sandman Biathlon, which consists of an approximately 1500 meter swim and 2 mile beach run.
Competitors lined up on the Hanalei River side of the pier for the beach race start. Athletes swam around the pier and headed toward the Cape for the turn around buoy and then swam back to the Hanalei Pier.
They exited the water and then sprinted to the Waioli Stream. After crossing the stream they ran around the turnaround marker and headed back for the finish back at the pier.
Leo McCarthy and Kathleen Littlefield held on to their first place titles finishing 41:49 and 46:27 respectively.
Top three males were McCarthy, Tom Potter (42:47) and John Grout (45:15). Top three females were Littlefield, Lois Lutz (50:36) and Pamela Garcia-Neveu (53:14).
Tom Potter had the fastest swim split with 22:40 and Juan Garcia-Neveu had the fastest run split with 18:05.

It was a successful event, once again, because all the great athletes who attended the free race and our wonderful race volunteers — especially Eric Lutz, Ginger Kenny and John Sargent. The race was organized and directed by Debi Rickert and Lois Lutz.
