The Kaua‘i Pony All Stars will be meeting Waiana‘e for the state championship this morning starting at 10 a.m. at the Central O‘ahu Park.
Coach Wayne Wakumoto of the Kaua‘i team was thrilled that Kaua‘i made it through the series for the title showdown.
“Our defense was solid, and the boys came through with the clutch hits at the right time,” he said following their 1-0 win over Maui, Monday on O‘ahu.
The Kaua‘i Pony All Stars created excitement at home, Friday afternoon as word came of their 2-0 win over Mililani behind the pitching of Jordan Buster.
“We’ve never beaten Mililani,” one of the spectators at the 2005 Hawai‘i Region Bronco Tournament said amidst a sea of Mililani fans.
But, that moment of elation was met with disappointment, Saturday, as Kaua‘i dropped to KAC, one of the tournament’s stronger opponents in an 11-8 loss in extra innings.
Dondi Viquelia, one of the Pony Baseball leaders said Kaua‘i was down 5-0 early in the game, but details could not be obtained because the O‘ahu people had their phones turned off.
That disappointment was erased, Sunday as Kaua‘i went on to take a 3-2 decision over Mililani “B” to set the stage for the Maui showdown, Monday.
“It’s going to be a fight between the No. 2’s,” Wakumoto said. “Waiana‘e also beat the top seed in their pool, so now it’s between the No. 2’s.”
