The Wizard of Oz won’t be the only Kansas experience for the Kaua‘i Kine fastpitch softball team, because the group will head to the Sunflower State from July 18-24 for the American Fastpitch Association’s (AFA) national championship softball tournament.
“This is the first time a team from Kaua‘i will play in a tournament of this caliber. There will be over 50 teams from across the U.S. and Canada,” Kaua‘i Kine coach Mike Koerte said.
The 16-and-under team is made up of girls from Kekaha to Kilauea, two girls from Texas, and one from California.
“College scouts will be in attendance watching out for players that show any potential or interest in playing college softball and the opportunities that could come from playing in this tournament can very well become a reality for any one of our girls,” Koerte said.
Coaches Darrell Borrero and Mike Koerte are very excited and grateful for having been invited to participate in the AFA National Tournament.
As both have said, this is an opportunity that not many of our girls have ever had. The exposure will hopefully put Kaua‘i on the map and bring additional tournament invitations.
After a week in Kansas, they will travel to Carlsbad, Calif., where they will join other Kaua‘i baseball teams to participate in a goodwill tournament from July 24-28.
Kaua‘i Kine would like to thank many of its sponsors, supporters, and everyone else who helped them raise funds for their trip to both mainland tournaments.
