WAIMEA — The colors of red, blue, white, green, and yellow flooded the Waimea Athletic Field, yesterday at the opening ceremony for the 2005 Hawai‘i Region Bronco Tournament.
It’s been over a decade since the event graced the Garden Isle and with the field looking good as ever, Kaua‘i showed the rest of the state, that it should be considered for regional happenings more often.
“I hope all of you enjoy playing baseball this week and our beautiful island as well — spend lots of money too, because we need it,” Kaua‘i PONY Region Director, Pat Baniaga said to the coaches, fans, and players.
The field, which looked its best, was groomed and perfected by Teddy Perreira and Mercy Lazaro.
Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste and county councilmember Jimmy Tokioka were on hand and addressed the crowd, under the hot westside sun.
“It’s an honor to have this tournament here on Kaua‘i and we believe that we have provided the best playing fields for all of you to play on, so enjoy and play hard,” Baptiste said.
The tournament continues today in Waimea and for the last three days, the event switches to the Lihu‘e County Park, with the championship game set for Sunday, July 17, at 10 a.m. In first day action ‘Aiea defeated Mililani “B,” 6-1; Lihu‘e ousted Hilo, 14-4; Mililani “A” trounced Maui, 11-1; and host West Kaua‘i was down, 3-10 in the sixth inning to O‘ahu’s III division winner.
There are four teams from O‘ahu, one from the Big Island, one from Maui, and two from Kaua‘i that participating in the olympic format tournament.
The winners of the two divisions will face off in the championship game and the overall title holder will advance to the Bronco West Zone Tournament.
