This summer, Kaua‘i has been awarded the honor of hosting the 2005 Hawai‘i Region Bronco Tournament. West Kaua‘i Youth Baseball League and Lihu‘e Baseball League, both under the direction of PONY Baseball of Kaua‘i, have joined forces to organize this tournament scheduled for July 13 — 17.
Gwen Earll, Hawai‘i State Region Director, PONY Baseball and Pat Baniaga, Kaua‘i Region Director, PONY Baseball, made the announcement at a meeting held in April of 2005. Both will serve as Tournament Director and Assistant Tournament Director respectively.
PONY, an acronym for Protect Our Nation’s Youth, has been a driving force for organizations dedicated to helping young people develop into healthier and happier adults through the sport of baseball.
The Bronco League division of PONY Baseball includes young men and women ages eleven and twelve, and is governed by the Official Rules of Major League Baseball and PONY Baseball rules and regulations, which contain those exceptions deemed necessary for a youth baseball program.
“We are excited,” says Baniaga “and look forward to showcasing our island, and the incredible talent of our Bronco Division players.” Teams from Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui and Hawai‘i Island will be battling for the opportunity to advance to the Bronco West Zone Tournament.
Facilities coordinators Thomas Nizo and Craig Koga have secured Waimea Athletic Field for the first two days of the tournament, July 13 and 14, and Lihu‘e County Park for the last three days of the tournament, July 15, 16, and 17. A pre-tournament meeting and reception for coaches and event organizers will be held on Tuesday, July 12th, Kalaheo Neighborhood Center at 7 p.m.
Additional details on game schedules and field assignments will be released at the end of the month.
