On ‘hangbacks’
I bow to the wisdom and knowledge of longtime resident Jaana Makipaa (Forum 7/1/05). I also thank her for delineating those I called slowpokes into very honorable categories.
Oh, but were it true, however, that the only passive-aggressive drivers were the ones immediately in front of me. The problem could then be solved by merely acquiring some effective therapy for yours truly.
Mark Twain devised a plan to deal with speeders in 1905. With each offense, the front license plate would be enlarged, “As a warning to pedestrians to climb a tree.”
Perhaps, as a plan to reduce road rage, the slowpokes could post one of Jaana’s categories in five-inch letters in the rear window for the driver behind to see. Of course, the passive-aggressive drivers are already pretending to be in one of these categories.
That’s OK. Under this plan, we could all fool ourselves into thinking this problem doesn’t exist, leading to a more peaceful island.
Habitual offenders
I’m in shock! It is beyond me why our legal system continually releases habitual offenders back into the populace!
I’m always amazed when I read the Police Log, that the same names appear on a regular basis. Why? Why are these habitual offenders continually being released to repeat and repeat and repeat their offenses? Probation does not deter! Short sentences do not deter! If we don’t have room at KCCC, put them in tents on the KCCC property, or send them to O‘ahu!
It’s time our elected officials come up with a law to protect us from repeat offenders!
Resents ‘hangback’ label
Aloha. This is in response to the letter published 6/29/05 regarding speed limits.
I frankly resent being called a “miserable hangback” with a “prissy moral imperative,” whatever is meant by such rhetoric, just because I obey the speed limits and allow traffic to merge from left or right.
In light of the two horrific vehicle accidents this week, it would seem more prudent to encourage safe and courteous driving. You, no doubt, do not publish all letters sent to you. Why give this individual a platform to express the negativity that probably comes from low self-esteem?
His recent letter calling fundamental Christianity a cult was hateful and in error, and offended many. We are so blessed to live on an island of incredible beauty. Let’s accentuate the positive!
