KAPA‘A — John Penn finished with 15 points to lead ZZ to a 33-30 win over the Kapa‘a “A” team in the first of three Boys 19 Under games played at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a, Tuesday night.
The Warriors pulled to within a digit in the final frame, but a Penn bucket surged ZZ out front with a final Warrior trey attempt coming up empty in the effort.
Referee Steven Carvalho noted that if that shot from three-pointland had sunk, it would’ve forced an overtime.
The Warrior “A” squad was outgunned by ZZ, 14-3 in the opening stanza with Penn nailing a trio from beyond the arc, and despite Kapa‘a’s comeback in the second half, 9-7, and 8-2 in the third and final periods respectively, came up short at the buzzer.
Greg Ragsac, James Aiu, Mike Lindsey, and Junnel Calpito led the third quarter Kapa‘a charge while Kalen Dolor dropped a pair of treys and a field goal in the final quarter for Kapa‘a.
Following Penn, Lance Okasaki chipped in seven points for the ZZ victory with Ryan Cram finishing with six points.
Dolor topped the Warrior “A” team scoring with 10 points followed by Lindsey finishing with six points, and Kapena Cummings adding five markers.
Brendan McDaniels netted 17 points and Chris Newcomb added 11 points to lead Waimea to a 47-25 victory over Kilauea in the second contest.
Teva Dexter broke through for 11 points to lead the Kilauea effort that was victimized by the quickness and strength of the Waimea team. Tommy Patch added six, and Ikaika Johnson chipped in five points.
Nate Berales finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Lihu‘e Breakaway to a 56-32 showing over the Kapa‘a “B” team in the finale.
Coach Billy Ramos noted that the Breakaway were a relatively young team that was playing up, most of their team being comprised of freshmen.
Both teams played close with the Breakaway putting the pedal to the metal in the final quarter, 21-8 with Berales leading the way on eight points.
Treston Rego took care of the inside and finished with nine points with Justin Ramos netting eight points.
Jeremy Robinson and Travis Stine each chipped in six points.
John Beralas topped the Kapa‘a “B” scoring with 10 points followed by Halem Medina adding six, and Evan Lotu contributing five points.
