KEKAHA — Young boys and girls interested in participating in a fun-filled sport, may now register for the 2005 Season of the Kekaha Pop Warner Association’s Tackle Football and Spirit programs. Registration forms are available at Waimea Big Save, Da Booze Shop in Waimea, and from any Kekaha Pop Warner Association Board Member.
Completed forms may be turned in on Wednesday afternoons from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., now through July 20th, and the entire week of July 25th through July 29th. A registration desk will be set up at the Kekaha Ball Park equipment building, next to the basketball court to collect and/or issue forms and answer any questions.
“One of our many goals this year,” says Kurt Toma, KPWA President “is to try and fulfill a team for each division; Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee and Midget.”
Tackle football allows children ages 8 — 15 and Spirit (cheer) allows children ages 7 — 15 to participate. Each registrant must furnish a copy of their birth certificate, medical insurance card and 2004/2005 school report card. A physical examination and registration fee are also required.
Pop Warner was founded in 1929, and since then has flourished. The organization Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS), as it is known today, is the only national youth sports organization that requires scholastic aptitude to participate. In addition to scholastics, its programs seek to develop well-rounded young men and women.
At the 2004 Pop Warner National Championships held in Orlando, Florida, the Kekaha Panthers placed first out of eighteen cheer squads in the Novice Division Jr. Pee Wee Small category, and the Kehaha Chargers placed sixth out of twenty-two cheer squads in the Intermediate Division Midget Small category.
“Just being able to represent Kaua‘i at the competition was a great honor. Then for us to place first and sixth, was truly a once in a lifetime experience for our girls” comments Mila Rapanot, KPWA Cheer Coordinator and Treasurer.
