Nawiliwili — Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament — Ranging in age from 3 to 16, as many as 30 Kauai keiki and their ohana braved gray skies and frequent passing showers to participate in the Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament sponsored for the 6th year by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club.
Keiki lined the docks and shores of the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor casting for “the big one” that would assure their early pick of the huge assortment of prizes generously contributed by the following sponsors: WalMart, Keiki Kottage, Kaua‘i Children’s Discovery Museum, Hawaii Fishing News, Avon Rep. Ann Burton, Kazi Foods-Burger King & Kentucky Fried Chicken, Cost-U-Less, Déjà Vu, First Hawaiian Bank-Kapaa Branch, Kalapaki Beach Hut, Kauai Lagoons Resort, Lihue Fishing Supply, Long’s Drug Store-Kapaa, True Blue Kauai-Kalapaki Beach Boys, Wallace Theaters and Pete & Nina Peterson.
When the 1 p.m. horn sounded and fishing was pau the judges went to work while the young crowd anxiously inspected the prize table.
Top anglers of the day were: Kiani Higa & Anikka Cadavona who tied for Biggest Fish Caught; Maka Bailey caught The Most Fish; Jensen Koga caught the Longest Fish (and the first fish of the day); Makane Daligcon caught the Fattest Fish; Aaron Salvador caught the Prettiest Fish; Trae Matsumoto caught the Cutest Fish; Kody Panui caught the Ugliest Fish; and Kaeden Fernandez caught The Most Unusual Fish.
Prizes were then awarded for the assortment of other marine life brought in for judging including crabs, guppies and shrimp. Then came the “Fish Story” awards.
Prizes were awarded as the keiki explained why they came in empty-handed. In the end, due to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, no keiki went home without a prize and everyone had a delightful Father’s Day.
The Nawiliwili Yacht Club is so grateful to the Kaua‘i Community for their continued support of this treasured event.
