PUHI – University of Hawai’i soccer player Natasha Kai was one of three players on hand with coach Josh Fauts as they entered the second of three UH soccer clinics here.
The final clinic will take place on Wednesday starting at 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for youngsters 7 to 12 years old. This clinic will take place at the Kapa’a High School.
Another clinic for youngsters 13 and above will start at 11 a.m. and run through 1 p.m.
Joining Kai are players Rachael Gonzales and Seline Williams who took advantage of the coaches’ clinic, Tuesday, to enjoy the shaded area at the Chiefess Kamakahelei School.
Glenn Morita, one of the soccer coaches in attendance, noted that Chelsea Pabo, a Kaua’i High School soccer player who graduated in June, was planning to walk-on at the UH program, and took advantage of the clinic to meet with coach Faust as well as some of the players.
The clinics started Monday at Waimea High School before moving to Chiefess Kamakahelei School, Tuesday.
While here, the soccer contingent has been hosted in part by Dan Ahuna who has been working with the county’s antidrug office to coordinate the series of clinics that started earlier this month with the UH volleyball clinic and followed by the Speed and Quickness clinics led by Rich Miano and Mel DeLaura.
Ahuna said that these clinics are beneficial in helping provide Kaua’i youngsters with something to do, especially during the summer months.
Additionally, he noted that the Speed and Quickness clinics benefit participants in all sports.
Following the UH soccer season, Kai was named to the Soccer Buzz All-West Region second team as voted by NCAA Division I coaches and Soccer Buzz staff. This is the third straight year that Kai has earned all-region honors.
The junior striker from Kahuku has been honored all-region by Soccer Buzz in each of her three seasons as a Rainbow Wahine.
Kai, who was a 2004 Western Athletic Conference first-team selection, and Hermann Award semi-finalist for national player of the year, led UH in goals (12) and points (29), setting a new school and WAC record for single-season shots (119). She finished third in WAC play in points (13) and goals (5).
Seline Williams of Mililani, earned a fulltime starter at center midfield in the fourth match of the year in their 2004 season.
Williams, who started in 17 of the final 18 matches of the year, finished the year with three assists, two of them game-winners, including serving up the game-winning assist in UH’s regular-season home finale, a 1-0 win over Boise State.
Rachael Gonzales of Kailua, O’ahu, while appearing in only one match, lettered four years in soccer while in high school, and was a two-time all-state selection. The UH Rainbow Wahine finished its season 12-6-3, one win shy of its school-record total.
