Numerous Kaua’i golfers qualify
Lihu’e’s Kelli Oride, Rae-Lynn Morikawa, Miki Ueoka, and Kapa’a’s Kellen Watabu all qualified for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship, to be held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Florida from July 21-31. There were 113 juniors between the ages of 10-18 years who competed at Turtle Bay Resort’s Par 72 Fazio Course on June 14.
This year’s qualifier proved to be an especially exciting event for the boys’ division with sub-par rounds and two playoffs for first-place. In the 16-18 year-old boys’ division, Tadd Fujikawa and Kellen Watabu’s 66s forced a playoff which resulted in Kellen claiming first-place.
Get involved with junior golf
“Celebrate with Junior Golf” is a clever concept which allows golfers regardless of abilities to contribute to Kaua’i Jr. Golf Association and all high schools on Kaua’i. Since its implementation in the fall of 2004, approximately 100 golfers have committed to participate in this novel way of supporting junior golf on Kaua’i.
golf team doing so well in the state championships over the last two years, supporting their efforts, and every other golfer in the junior golf association is a rewarding endeavor.
June is the last month for those willing to participate. They have set aside June 25, a Saturday, for one last chance for those who haven’t yet participated in this program. They are hoping that golfers on that Saturday will accept the challenge, which will take place at the Wailua Golf Course. To learn more call Art at 822-4158.
