The 2005 KIF track and field season had its ups and downs, but with a host of unofficial records broken at the KIF championship meet, it was surely a year to remember.
Recently, the KIF announced its list of all-stars for the 2005 track and field season.
Among those on the list included three-time winners, Chelsea Pabo of Kaua‘i who won in the 100, 300 hurdles, and 4×100 relay, Lance Okasaki of Kaua‘i in the 110, 300 hurdles, and 4×400 relay, Scott Martin of Waimea in the 1500, 800, and 3000, and Jamilee Jimenez in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
Kaua‘i sophomore Chelsea Smith-Wishard was the only KIF athlete to win titles in four events.
She took home first-place finishes in the 1500, 800, 3000, and 4×400 relay.
Two-time winners included Emma Makepa-Foley of Kaua‘i (100, 4×100 relay), Waimea’s Troy Yamase (100, 4×100 relay), Kaua‘i’s Tiffany Ikeda-Simao (4×100 relay, 200), Kaua‘i’s Ashley “Road Runner” Johnston (4×100 relay, 4×400 relay), Waimea’s Thomas Batis (4×100 relay, triple jump), Kaua‘i’s Savannah Rollins (4×400 relay, 400), Kapa‘a’s Joe Locey (400, 200), Kaua‘i’s Kevin Cadiente (4×400, long jump), and Kaua‘i’s Erin Fabro (shot put, discus).
Single event winners included Kapa‘a’s Greg Ragsac (high jump), Kapa‘a’s Nathaniel Langi (shot put), Kapa‘a’s Stetson Thronas (discus), Kaua‘i’s Brian Rodriguez (4×400 relay), Kaua‘i’s Jeffrey Tabalba (4×400 relay), Kaua‘i’s Kristen Shim (4×400 relay), and Waimea’s Kenny Estes (4×100 relay).
Definitely the highlight of the 2005 track and field season was the state championship gained by Waimea’s 4×100 boys relay team of Thomas Batis, Kenny Estes, Troy Yamase, and Eric Oroc, who repeated as champs and broke the state meet record in the process.
Also, Kapa‘a’s Jennifer Lindsey successfully defended her state high jump title with another gold medal. Fellow Warrior, Joe Locey earned another gold medal, his third of his career, with a first-place finish in the 200.
But above all of that was the overall fourth-place finish by the Menehune boys, who racked up enough points to roll with the big boys of Punahou, Kahuku, and Kamehameha-O‘ahu.
