LIHU‘E – Sports clinics covering skills in volleyball, football, and soccer are scheduled to take place at schools around the island starting next week.
The first workshop is scheduled for Waimea High School Gym on Wednesday, June 7 which will feature Charlie Wade, the assistant coach for the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine who will be accompanied by several UH volleyball players.

The final Speed and Quickness clinic is scheduled for the Kapa‘a High School Gym on Saturday, June 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. for youngsters between 7 and 12 years of age. A second clinic for youngsters 13 years and older is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for students to meet college athletes and coaches, and pick up valuable pointers from them,” said Michael Tresler, assistant coach for the Kaua‘i High School football team as well as former all-WAC player at the University of Hawai‘i.
For those interested in bettering their soccer skills, UH Assistant soccer coach Josh Fouts and several UH soccer players will be offering their help at a series of clinics starting Monday, June 20 at Waimea High School.
The first clinic is for youngsters from 7 to 12 years and will run from 8 to 10 a.m. The second clinic is for youngsters 13 and above and will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
That clinic will move to the Chiefess Kamakahelei School on Tuesady, June 21 with youngsters between 7 to 12 attending the 8 to 10 a.m. clinic, and the 13 and above youth getting into the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. session.

The final stop for the soccer clinics is at Kapa‘a High School on Wednesday, June 22 with youngsters 7 to 12 years old getting into the 8 to 10 a.m. session, and the 13 and above youngsters attending the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. clinic.
Waimea High School principal William Arakaki who will be hosting all of the clinics held at his school is very pleased with the program. “In addition to youngsters sharpening their athletic abilities, these clinics also teach them decision-making skills and how to make the right choices – not to do drugs, but to engage in worthwhile activities.”
Arakaki also expressed his gratitude to Mayor Bryan Baptiste, and Roy Nishida for helping to make these types of activities available for Kaua‘i’s youth.
“These types of clinics were held on O‘ahu for youngsters there,” Nishida, the county’s anti-drug coordinator, said. “We asked out legislators for help in getting funding to bring the clinics to Kaua‘i.”
In 2004, the state Legislature approved $32,000 for this program with the funds being released this year.
“The program is part of our Kaua‘i Community Drug Response Plan that was spear-headed by Roy, and developed by a number of our community organizations,” said Baptiste. “Prevention programs like the sports clinics are a major component of the plan.”
