Kaua‘i tips off this afternoon
The KIF Girls Basketball champions Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders will make their bid for the 2005 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) title as they open the championship series, Tuesday afternoon against the Roosevelt Rough Riders.
Punahou received the top seed in the Hawaiian Airlines sponsored state championship series with Konawaena getting the second seed. The Kahuku Red Raiders are the third seed and Lahainaluna rounds out the top four seeds.
Should Kaua‘i succeed against the Rough Riders, Tuesday, they will go up against the top seeded Buff and Blue on Wednesday starting at 4:15 p.m.
A loss Tuesday will relegate Kaua‘i to the vanquished of the Kaiser/Honoka‘a game. That game will take place on Wednesday starting at 11 a.m.
Team members include Tahnee Shigematsu, Corey Arashiro, Rachael Taira, Starlene “Ulu” Kelekoma, Ashley “AJ” Silva, Tamalyn Hasegawa, Kassy Morishige, Sherri Gebauer, Darcie Allianic, Ho‘onani Dennis, Kailee Andrade. Cherisse Rapozo is also on the team as an injured member.
Head coach is Dennis Aquino with assistant coaches Angela Lopez, Teresa Morita, and Sheila Harlin.
Kaua‘i baseball pitches on Wednesday
The KIF champion Kaua‘i High School baseball team will face the Pearl City Chargers in the second game of the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) state baseball tournament, Wednesday, May 18.
Kaua‘i did not receive a seed for the state tournament and will be involved in the second game of opening day scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Should Kaua‘i be successful against the Chargers, they advance to face top seeded Punahou on Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m. A loss in their opening game will pit the Red Raiders against the loser of the opening Moanalua/Maui matchup.
Top seeds for the HHSAA baseball championships include Punahou, Kailua, Baldwin, and Waiakea.
There will be live radio broadcast of that game by Joel Pahukula on KQNG Am 570.
Cadiente goes hard
Kelsey Cadiente notched a game-high 23 points as Go Hard nudged Wailua, 29-21 in the KYBA Girls Under 12 games played Saturday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.Kaira Kupihea led the Wailua scoring with eight points.
Leilani Laranio finished with 13 points to lead Wailua I in the Girls Under 14 game, but the effort fell short as Wailua I dropped, 33-31 to Team Swish. The top scorer for Team Swish notched 17 points.
Prem and Callejo lead Westside
Kahea Prem and clifton Callejo each finished with eight points to lead the Westside Heat to a 31-28 win over Hanamaulu in the latest KYBA Boys Under 12 contest played Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.Canaan Higa topped the Hanamaulu scoring with 11 points.
Kierra Barba came up with seven points to lead the Westside Hornets to an 18-12 win over Wailua II in the KYBA Girls Under 14 game at Kalaheo. Reggie McCabe topped the Wailua II scoring with five points.
KIF Volleyball officials
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation (KIF) is looking for community members interested in becoming volleyball officials.
