Leaders of a production company based in Salt Lake City, Utah were on Kaua‘i last week taping footage for a 30-minute TV program, “Endless Vacations,” that will air on Women’s Entertainment (WE) TV, a cable channel available in Kaua‘i (channel 66 on Oceanic Time Warner Cable).
Demetrius Graham, a producer for Lenz-Works Productions, said, “there were a lot of motivations for coming to Kaua‘i to tape. But, mainly, we felt is was just the most unique island,” he said.
Graham said the episode would air just weeks from now, on or about Tuesday, June 7.
Graham said that, in addition to the WE TV network airing, the program would be run on the Oxygen TV network as well (channel 62 on Oceanic Time Warner Cable).
Graham said it is possible this episode would also be picked up by leaders with the Travel Network (channel 58, Oceanic Time Warner Cable).
Art Umezu, county film commissioner, said the presence of the eight-person crew was a real bonus to the island
“The show will be exclusively dedicated to Kaua‘i. The exposure is great for the island,” he said, referring to what essentially amounts to 30 minutes of free advertising for the island.
He said this was especially important in the light of the recent failure by members of the state Legislature to pass a bill meant to streamline Hawai‘i’s motion-picture-incentive program.
Umezu said that, unlike a big movie such as “Jurassic Park,” which was filmed on Kaua‘i, leaders on the TV program will regularly identify Kaua‘i as the location where the show was taped.
Umezu was called up by Lenz-Works officials to suggest locations, and to other-wise facilitate production, he said.
“It’s refreshing to have this film crew here,” he said, adding he’d received inquiries from MTV officials about a summer shoot. Umezu said plans are preliminary at this point.
Umezu also suggested the crew shoot some footage in historic Hanapepe.
Part of the crew was in Hanapepe Friday afternoon, taping a number of locations and segments, according to Joanna Carolan, owner of Banana Patch Studio and an advocate for Hanapepe’s economic development.
The crew was also busy taping at Silver Falls Ranch in Kalihiwai Ridge over the weekend.
