Credit everyone but yourself and you’ll win a KIF title. That’s what Kapa‘a High School girls’ junior varsity head coach Theresa Maguire did after her squad nailed down the win on Friday for the KIF championship against Waimea.
Maguire’s squad already had a piece of the pie and it was Waimea and head coach Bobby Kamakele, who wanted a share of the first-place prize, but after a 46-27 win, the Warriors claimed the title.
Kapa‘a finished its 2005 campaign with an impressive 6-2 record, with the Menehune holding down the second slot at 4-4, and Kaua‘i rounded out the top three with a 2-6 showing.
Maguire, who is assisted by her husband Gary, mentioned that the team played unselfishly this season and were helped out by individuals within the Warrior family.
“We actually had great support from the boys’ basketball team, who came out to help our girls during practices and they even came out to support us at the games, too,” Maguire said.
Kapa‘a was led by Leilani Laranio, Hanalei Gomes, Rachel Ganir, Danielle Jure, and Roselynn Ebinger, who each put up double figures for at least one game of the season. Freshmen Laranio and Gomes, the leading scorers of the team, seem adept enough for the varsity level.
Rounding out the 2005 KIF JV champions are Sarah Tangalin, Ella Arume, Hannah Steed, Caroline Troutman, Teeana Valpoon, Chanita Makanui, and Chelsie Villatora.
The Menehune JV squad played tough throughout the season and were led by Sunni Acosta, Jamie Horikawa, Kristen Takashima, Tatum Gonsalves, Sheana Mata, Sasha Kaohi, and Resha Banasihan. Ku‘ulei Arizo, Victoria Espino, Lee Ann Sagucio, Beatrice Moniz, and Whitney Cachero make up the entire 2005 Waimea girls’ JV squad.
Although Kaua‘i mustered up only two wins this season, it was still well earned as the Red Raiders and head coach Brian Inouye made every game interesting. Kaua‘i was led by Carie Inouye, Jimena Loseto, Amanda Mayer, and Lauren James. Other team members included Krystal Ijima, Darci Murata, Sharae Asai-Lee, Kourtni Domingo, Tiffany Ikeda-Simao, Britten Jacinto, Tristen Rosare, Kori Masuda, Nicole Fujimoto, Jamilee Jimenez, and Shana Tafiti.
