It’s do or die time for both the Red Raider and Menehune girls’ basketball teams, with the KIF championship game set for Monday in Waimea at 7 p.m.
But with both teams going in opposite directions, the game could turn out be a one-sided affair.
The Red Raiders come into tomorrow’s game with a four game winning streak and the second round title. On the other hand, the Menehune suffered their fourth straight defeat against the Warriors on Friday night.
But don’t count out Waimea just yet, especially in championship games. Menehune head coach Elton Montemayor will have his troops ready for the battle. After three key players (Melissa Moreno, Joanna Jacinto, Josey Jacinto) were removed from their roster about a week ago, the team must rely heavily on inexperienced players.
Kaua‘i’s one-two scoring punch of Ulu Kelekoma and Rachel Taira have torn up opponents in the second round. Taira has found her touch and Kelekoma portrays the all-around do-it-all talents that make the difference when the game goes down to the wire.
The win or go home Monday night matchup should be a standing room only affair, so get there early! The winner heads to O‘ahu for the girls’ state basketball tournament, which runs from May 17-20.
