The annual membership meeting of the Kaua‘i Island Utilities Cooperative (KIUC) was held Saturday afternoon at Kilohana in Puhi. Support for alternative energy creation development was the top item on the meeting’s agenda.
Board chairman Gregg Gardiner announced that the electrical cooperative plans to spend some $40 million over the next eight years in creating renewable energy sources for Kaua‘i’s electrical users. He said KIUC would be holding alternative energy meetings starting in June.
Gardiner said that KIUC has plans to return $63 million to its members over the next 10 years, and reported that in 2004 the cooperative saved $1 million by increasing the efficiency of its Port Allen-based generating facility.
The annual gathering drew its largest crowd yet, estimated at over 500 people. The event featured giveaways of bags of rice and other items.
